How to Get Closer
To God in 6 Simple Steps

“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you…” James 4:8

What a magnificent Savior we serve!
When he has rescued us from the miry pit and delivered us from the grips of Satan,
we have so much to be eternally grateful for.

Whether we are new Christians, or those who have been serving the Lord for many years,
there is always room for us to draw closer to Him and to know Him better.

Even so, there are times we may be doing all we know to do but feel like we could be doing more.
Or possibly, we want to draw closer to our Lord, but we just don’t know how.

Friends, we can draw closer to Him! It will take some discipline on our part,
but if our true desire is to know Him more and to be closer to Him, it is not only doable, it is worth it!

Let us explore some of the ways!

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature:
old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” 2 Corinthians 5:17

When we are born again, we are born into a spiritual world we never knew before.

In the spiritual sense, we begin to learn, much like a baby, how to walk, how to talk and
how to function in our new life with Christ.

We are introduced to a new diet of what we ingest, the habits we have and the lifestyle we live.

It is of the utmost importance that we realize our new life is very different from our old life.
No worries-God knows that growing as a Christian is a process, and not an overnight transition into perfection.

However, we cannot let that be an excuse to continue in our old ways.

So, what can we do to make progress in the process?

Pray: The First Step to Draw Near God

1 Thessalonians 5:17 tells us to “Pray without ceasing” Prayer is simply our communication with God.

He is with us wherever we go. We can talk to Him anywhere, anytime.

When we are in our car on our way to work, or when we are waking up and starting our day,
God is there and He’s ready to hear from us. He wants to hear from us.

If we only have a short moment to thank Him, or an entire hour to bask in His presence,
we need to take the time to pray.

Relationships don’t grow when there is no communication.

Read The Word

The Word is not just a pretty book filled with the thoughts of God from men who walked the Earth.
The Word is God’s way of speaking to us. He moved upon men to write the Word.

The Bible shares the ways of God, and the more we read, the more we know Him.
Psalm 119:11 says, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee”

Knowing His Word shows us what pleases him, what he hates, what he expects of His children,
the promises He has given to those who love him, and more.

Reading the Word helps us to know our Savior, which is the desire of our hearts.

Music as a way to Get Close To Jesus

1 Samuel 16:23 tells us part of a story about Saul and David.

It says, “And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp,
and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him”

Music is a powerful tool in our lives. In this particular story, it was used to make an evil spirit depart.

Listening to music that lifts up Jesus will change our atmosphere too.

Not only do the words glorify God, when we listen to the message within the song,
we are reminded of the awesomeness of God.

To be reminded of His goodness while listening to music is a win-win that assists us
in keeping our mind on Him more throughout the day.

What do we set before our eyes?

Romans 1:29-32 is a powerful reminder of how strongly God feels about sin:
“Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness;
full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful,
proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding,
covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death,
not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them”

Friends, what do we allow to be set before our eyes?

Unfortunately, a lot of the amusement that is accepted as normal entertainment,
and is pumped into living rooms across the world, glorifies many of the things God has delivered us from.

We must ask ourselves,
“If God saved me from these sinful ways, how does He feel if I watch someone else do it instead?”

The obvious answer is that He wants our hearts to be pure and clean
and does not want us lusting after what He hates.

WHAT DO WE READ FOR ENTERTAINMENT?

We must also consider the books, magazines and website content we choose to focus on.

Current events are reality, and while we shouldn’t dwell on them day in and day out,
we should be aware of the world around us.

But what do we read for fun?

Is it laced with swearing and sexual innuendos? Does it glorify violence and abuse?

These types of content only stir up our “old selves”, and do not help us to draw closer to God.

In fact, they accomplish the opposite.

Who are our closest friends?

Kindness should be the common practice of Christians.

Being rude doesn’t need to be part of who we are, and really, it shouldn’t.

That being said, some of the people we choose to keep as close friends are not interested in our spiritual growth,
and in many cases, oppose it and would love to see us return to our ways before we decided to follow Jesus.

In such cases, the Bible is clear about those friendships.

2 Corinthians 6:14-18 says,
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness
with unrighteousness?
and what communion hath light with darkness?

And what concord hath Christ with Belial?

or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols?

for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will
dwell in them, and walk in them;
and I will be their God, and they
shall be my people.

Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord,
and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty”

Sometimes we need to make the difficult choice of letting certain friendships drift,
while engaging in new friendships that will help us to be saved.
But we can be encouraged in that too.

The Lord will bring us beautiful new friends.

God’s desire is to see us succeed, and that is why His Word
directs us away from things that will harm and hinder us spiritually.

As we strive to draw closer to our Savior, the list above will make a huge impact in our lives.

God wants us to draw closer to Him, and when our desire is to also draw closer to Him,
we have everything we need to begin today!
