Psalm For 2nd Sunday Of Advent: Trusting in God’s Faithfulness
Psalm 85:1-2
“Lord, you have been favorable to your land;
you have restored the fortunes of Jacob.
You have forgiven the iniquity of your people;
you have covered all their sin.”
As we embark on the second Sunday of Advent, we are reminded of the importance of trust and faith in God’s faithfulness. The Psalm for this week serves as a beautiful reminder of God’s unfailing love and mercy towards His people.
In our daily lives, it is easy to become overwhelmed by the trials and tribulations that surround us. The weight of the world can sometimes feel unbearable, leaving us questioning if there is any hope to be found. However, the Psalmist reminds us that even in the darkest of times, God’s favor shines upon us.
The opening verses of Psalm 85 express gratitude for God’s restoration of the fortunes of Jacob. This reference to Jacob symbolizes the entire nation of Israel, representing God’s chosen people. Just as God forgave the iniquities of Israel and covered their sins, we too can find solace in the knowledge that God’s forgiveness knows no bounds.
When we recognize our own shortcomings and repent of our sins, God extends His grace and mercy to us. We are not defined by our past mistakes but by the forgiveness and restoration found in Christ Jesus. This is a truth that should inspire us to live lives filled with hope and joy.
In a world that often focuses on the negative, it can be challenging to maintain an unwavering trust in God’s faithfulness. However, the Psalmist reminds us that God is always near, ready to shower us with His abundant love. In verse 9, the Psalmist writes:
“Surely His salvation is near those who fear Him,
That glory may dwell in our land.”
When we fear and reverence God, we position ourselves to receive His salvation. It is in this posture of surrender that we open ourselves to experience the fullness of God’s glory. Our trust in His faithfulness is rewarded with His presence and blessings.
As we continue our Advent journey, let us remember that God is the source of all hope and restoration. Amidst the chaos and brokenness of the world, He remains steadfast and unchanging. We can find comfort and strength in knowing that God’s favor is upon us, even in the midst of our own failings.
Psalm 85:13 beautifully sums up the message of hope and trust found in this Psalm:
“Righteousness will go before Him,
And shall make His footsteps our pathway.”
When we align ourselves with God’s righteousness, we can confidently walk in His footsteps. We can trust that He will guide us and lead us on a path of righteousness. This path may not always be easy or straightforward, but we can have faith that God’s faithfulness will never waver.
As we reflect on the words of this Psalm, let us be reminded of the hope we have in Christ. In Him, we find forgiveness, restoration, and an unbreakable bond with our Heavenly Father. Let us trust in God’s faithfulness, knowing that He is at work in our lives, even when we cannot see it.
As we prepare our hearts for the coming of our Savior, may this Psalm serve as a source of inspiration and encouragement. Let us hold fast to the promise that God’s favor rests upon us, and His forgiveness covers all our sins. In Him, we find peace, hope, and everlasting joy.
